Presentation

Welcome to the creative writing of text, with the association DA.MI, here are some tips and practical information to get started initiation!

History and some definitions of HIP HOP / RAP :

according to Manuel Boucher (Union
People and Culture) RAP - Expression of lascard, meanings and issues
French rap in society, Preface: Hugues Bazin, the HARMATTHAN.

What is RAP?

Rap:

This kind of music, because of "diction half spoken, half sung texts produced, rhymed, rhythmic, be associated with a cultural environment defined by the term" hip hop "which means a better way to live in a society that does not meet inspirations of some youth born, mostly from immigration. "
"The origins of rap are to be found in the movements African American musicians (notably Jamaica), it is worn in France in the 1980s by young second-generation immigrants themselves who write their texts to say their revolts and hopes.
The message is political (resist the system) and spiritual (the individual building
as being free). "

What is rap?

"Rap is an educational function: the rappers binding function of artists
with the educators, when rap used to teach reading, writing or history, or even foreign languages. When it comes to "take charge" and "love with knowledge" to build "his freedom? ".
"It would be so easy to reduce the report to an expression of young, impoverished immigrant suburbs or suburban poor young immigrant (your choice).
While the rap and hip hop articulate arts and social expressions. And the author restored several important functions: to speak and testify, assert and act to open paths of integration, resist oppression. "
"Message" on a social level, the message, like a mirror, returns to the realities
daily. This is the direct writing of social columnist, writing visual
director of life.
"However, even if the report is very pragmatic and descriptive, it proclaims in an urban poetry that we will see, will only continue to assert themselves through hip hop culture in all urbanized societies in the world. The report asserts itself as a practice and then delivers the messages easy to understand. This rule has not changed today. "
On a cultural level, the message updates the codes, which confirm the cohesion of a group. We are checking for signs of belonging to a family in the way of speaking, the lexical repertoire etc ...
On a symbolic level, the message provides an imaginary landscape, discover behind the scenes, other links.
Be in motion resulting in multiple expression. That means beating in rhythm (speech, gesture), to acquire a conscience (an evaluation of personal and collective), establish a network of relation (mobile network).

Hip-Hop

What is HIP HOP?

"Hip hop is a way to live, think and be smart especially in relation to society more and more dry. Hip hop, it's water from the desert of feelings we offer society. "
"Hip": the American black ghettos (voc, sound, rhythm of speech)
"Hep" "jive talk" (street slang)
"To hop" dancing.
The four disciplines: rap, dance, deejaying, graffiti.

The "political" dimension of rap from the ghetto to the Zulu Nation.

- A universal dimension. "The music itself - even has no color, no race in music. This is the rap that you add it determines whether it is black, white or something universal. "
- "The brotherhood, hope, love of neighbor and world peace leads to a universal message often misunderstood" in Rome. G. Lapassade and P. Rousselot, August, 1990.
In fact, come from American black ghettos, rap knows how to hold a universal language that affects all youth popular in Western countries (London, Berlin, Paris, ...). The report provides values, claims, an expression, denounced the phenomena are essential for the youth of the suburbs of the world.
Afrika Bombaataa : "He met the report, which appears to be a good way (importance of language, speech, creativity ...) to raise awareness to the youth of some of the problems experienced by young people in cities like violence and crime (...). It is to transform the negative energy of young people living in urban U.S. (young ghetto blacks, Puerto Ricans, ...), youth of all major world cities) image constructively through the street culture Hop.Zulu Hip Hip Hop Nation fate of the black American ghetto. It establishes a charter (...) issues such as: "peace among men, at the end of the nation as to race, end violence, end the drug, end the hatred that is the charter of all Nations> Zulus, scattered over the globe, from Paris to Tokyo, via Rome. G.
Lapassade and P. Rousselot, August, 1990.

"Besides, often by social workers, rappers cities become spokespeople for their peers. In this dynamic, in addition, social workers can work only in the exclusion, but in a fun and culturally more rewarding. "

Supervisor : Paulo César Massano : Educator Specialist:

What can influence the process of ghettoization on the genesis of delinquent behavior?
Youth culture from the deprived areas: the "hip hop" rap.
It asks the questions as follows:
- What is the Hip Hop culture?
- Where does this?
- Why young people from deprived areas to give so much
important?
- What is the role that culture for these young people?
To answer these questions we will rely on the evidence that Anne-Marie Green was able to present in his book "Young people and music" (1). Have related stories of twenty young people from 18 to 20 years from the deprived areas (difficult life situation: unemployment, school failure ...) fascinated by the Hip Hop culture: the Rap (average duration of interviews of 40 minutes to an hour approximately).

A. Hip Hop : The Rap

Anne - Marie GREEN Rap defines as "a popular musical genre born in the United States during the 70s, in the black ghettos and neighborhood disadvantage, within a culture: the culture" HIP HOP ". This culture like the "Melting Pot" (brings together many different ethnic groups) brings together the arts related to the street and the "black American culture," including rap, encoded by the language of street slang, abbreviations, different expressions and "cryptic". The Rap family has several meanings: "To Rap" in America means talking, talking (...). Rap means above all "a style of expression, mi - spoken texts using elaborate rhyme and rhythm, on a musical produced by mixing extracts of records and other sound sources": the Mix, the Sampling ( or sampling), the Scratch (Refers to a technique of improvisation employed by a DJ). ".
This style of music has been exported outside the black ghettos of the United States, particularly in countries such as Japan, South America, Europe. Rap is a popular music broadcasting messages to the players claimants politicians. These speeches have put the Rap as a kind of freedom of expression, or in spite of censorship, stereotypes that could be assigned, it is still present. This culture is mediated through different media: radio, television, internet (myspace, etc ....), The recording industry, film.
There groups of individuals around the music, they feel represented and recognized. It was a collective movement, and social and cultural representations Rap music.

B. Message :
What is the purpose of creating a musical protest, what messages do we want to convey?

Anne - Marie GREEN 2 provides an answer to these questions, it's a message that want to increase the assets of this movement: "The Rap still expresses a desire, a willingness on the part of its actors, to find a place in a society that does not accept them. For this reason, this mode of expression has often been accompanied by a certain marginalization. This practice is to the fore a term characterized by the search for a message (Gand Master Flash: describing ghetto life in the United States), an idea, a debate. The aim is to encourage listeners in an awareness of the themes mentioned: "to awaken and inform young people" (1992, Bambaata, representative of the Hip Hop movement). ".

2 Anne - Marie Green, (1997, Young and music, Rock, Rap, Techno ", L'Harmattan, p. 174)
3Anne - Mary GREEN (1997, Young and music, Rock, Rap, Techno ", L'Harmattan, p. 175)

C. Freedom of expression :

The author Anne - Marie Green insists that this music is a form
freedom of expression to convey positive messages: "It is also an expression to unite, to look like all cultures, to fight against exclusion and individualism" .3

D. Rap and city youth in difficulty :
Why city youth have appropriated to style of music?

The Rap arrived in France in 1983 in Paris, mainly dance (breakdance, break dance ...) on the occasion of concerts in the suburbs.
So the suburban youth are interested in is this style of culture and began practicing it, over at that time was a TV show dedicated to Hip Hop (Moderator Sydney, Hip Hop dance competition) where we found a multitude of the young practiced.
Thus, the city youth have appropriated this style, Hip Hop
propose is composed of different disciplines: graffiti, dance,
Rap and deejaying.
It is this discipline "Rap" that young people in deprived areas highlighted, because they call Rap: 4 "The Rap then developed several styles: a hard style and provocative mainly from north of Paris, Hard - Core (Rap, hard, harsh, violent and crude; performed by groups from very poor neighborhoods in suburbs, like in these neighborhoods, "the scum" or "curdle" and a more moderate style and focused on the party or dance, rap cool (cool, quiet, calm).. "

E. Rap music, music of the offender.

The Rap style is practiced mostly by suburban youth, the media describe it as music of the offender. Among the suburban youth, some have taken the rap seriously, they have become artists include MC Solar, which in 1995 won "a victory for the music" for his album "Prose Combat".

4Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno», L’Harmattan, page 177)

F. Rap music, an exit face of crime.

Rap was for these young people something new, a style that suits them, like them and talks to them. They are involved in this new kind of music, they are appropriate. Thus, a person such as MC Solaar, leading by example, from difficult neighborhoods he succeeded with Rap having a status of the artist and non-offending:
5 "This achievement makes this medium a new form of integration, a way to avoid the hassle by the motivation can make the practice of music:" At the time or other were to gang tax jackets, we preferred we found a group to practice painting, dance and music, "says MC Solaar in most of his interviews. ".

G. Young people from deprived areas want to exist:

These young people use rap as a means of expression, they want to show they exist, they are also part of society. When speaking to denounce it, to tell what they live in their neighborhoods, is not a request for help? :
6 "Rap music as an expression of urban society rejects the facts of the social crisis caused by (violence, murder, drugs)," The self - destruction is leading to self - destruction, ( ...), we all gathered to fight for what is right, not to cause a negative way we live is positive, not kill our relatives "(KRS ONE, founder of" Stop the Violence Movement " extracted from the text "Self - Destruction", 1988). "

5 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno », L’Harmattan, page 177)
6 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno », L’Harmattan, page 179)

H. Youth culture from the deprived areas: the "hip hop": The Rap

The author Anne - Marie GREEN speculates as follows: 7 "... the process of appropriation of rap music among youth, and the efforts of the ownership and the practice, the choice of maintenance and the population then comes an assumption that is the positive impact of a practice on his players. ".
Part F (rap music, an exit face of crime) that we have developed a good illustration of the assumption that we have just mentioned, music is an escape door to delinquency.
Rap is a style of music that talks about the problems facing society (job insecurity, unemployment, etc. ...), it tends to affect all people, all social classes, and the artist who borrows is for most cases originating from disadvantaged neighborhoods. Young participant in suburban rap because they like the music and is easily accessible: the language is common, or we refer to the language of the street (slang, slang ...), practical self-direct and spontaneous. Young people feel closer to the Rap as classical music, they find that classical music is not about social class.
Thus, the city youth in trouble want to learn about Hip Hop culture: Rap as they are a fan of an artist and because they recognize themselves through words, this is called for by the author Anne Marie - GREEN "the process of musical discovery" 8: "The process of musical discovery to the gradual construction of the individual based on a model: a person identifies with a musician, his style, or expression and appropriates, following the genre. The rapper realizes that it is in an artist and his music, he comes to practice it - even the music develops a personal style and expression through this cycle: discovery and appropriation.
Amateur or professional, everyone seems in their musical journey, going through this cycle.

I. The rapper and the social role

When the rapper speaks, the microphone is to send a message (see B. Post), then s'initient first in this art the "big brothers", who lived with the, tell, inform young people, the people of what they experienced and what surrounds them. Thus, the rapper to a social role: 9 "As defined by Jean - Claude Abric, in" Social practices and representations "(PUF - 1994 - page 217)," social practices are socially organized action systems and institutions related roles. " Musical practices are defined in this way, rap and practice is a structured system of social action. ".

8 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno », L’Harmattan, page 187)
9 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno », L’Harmattan, page 191)

Sample testimony :
-10: "Rap is a way to express themselves, to send a message, the rappers are talking about serious stuff, they tell the truth." (Arnaud).
- "Rap is the music of young, even if the basis is primarily a black music, which comes from the Jazz. The Jazz is the first music, it also has messages. With the Blues too, it tells the story of slavery .... " (Olivier).
-11 "Singing is a way to express themselves, to speak, to tell the galley, which we saw people's problems, to show others that we, you know what happens and we do everything to say, no matter what they say is the truth of the messages we send. People need to hear it. " (Olivier).

J. What is the role that culture for these young people?

First, the public listens to what kind of music sees the positive messages, remember that the rappers have a social role. Second, those who practice this music had their behavior changed. Rappers come from tough neighborhoods, they sometimes use their experiences to share painful to the public. Note that when telling their painful experiences, we feel a new personality, maturity, a break with the past. They realize the contribution of Rap, it gives them a new mindset, not to "languish" in their plight, and looks to the future.

10 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno», L’Harmattan, page 192)
11 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno», L’Harmattan, page 197)

Sample testimony : 12 - ... at that moment, everything changes. I meet you, I already knew Modest and a little Mamadou because it was in my class, we began gradually to get started, and ultimately, we make music together, and many Fortunately, things are very different for me, and all those who followed. Those who left, fell back in the galley!
One finds the rapper MC Solaar's speech (see Part F. rap music, an emergency exit face of crime), the fact of having invested in the music, it allowed him not to do tricks, sell drugs on the street.
The return to the street is no longer synonymous with making music and to depart from its projects, while the taste for musk gives them a good reason, they cling to something that makes them much good.

Sample testimony : 13 - "Music has changed me, I'm not the same and I regret it. I am no longer in the gallery, out of trouble, it's over, it opened my eyes. Every time I think of all that, I'm even more motivated. And then it is possible to react the other, make them aware. ".

12 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno », L’Harmattan, page 199)
13 Anne – Marie GREEN, (1997, Des jeunes et des musiques, Rock, Rap, Techno », L’Harmattan, page 202)

The music fills the missing :
The young people interviewed are often school dropouts, unemployed, then the music will give meaning to their lives, it will give them motivation. For some of these young music is the only activity. They were out of status, thanks to the music they feel important, they have a social role: 14 "Music repairs due to a lack context of their lives, their circumstances, their initial behavior. These young people become representatives of their neighborhoods, residents, social classes to which they belong and their generation living in this context. They are like the speakers to a whole social group. ".
The music adds value to that practice, the young feel useful, it sets up projects, it is organized, it remains in the occupational, music has "a role in restructuring and repair function" 15.

Finally, as an educator specialist, I work within the cultural association, DA.MI (give more). I am involved in creative writing text with teenagers enrolled in social structures, since 2000. It is amazing to see all the school youth interested in creative writing text. They have learned to love writing and reading. They are fascinated by singers or singers, they want to look like, and why they work writing, voice, text with "pleasure." They deal with serious themes like the living conditions of homeless people, they help newspapers, computer (internet) to further their research. The writing workshops allows the valuation of self.

5 good reasons to participate in writing workshops text

1 / The transition from fantasy to reality.
"They realize they are not invincible."

In everyday life, children from 13 to 17, identify with the heroes, gangsters, and other characters such as Tony Montana.
By the discovery of a writing workshop text, they learn to bridge the gap between the real and the imaginary. They learn they can no longer conscious identification with this or these mighty heroes that can beat anyone, or buy everyone ... In short, it is not invincible hero in the real world! The fall of the third floor is painless ultimately impossible when one feels the impact of a fall of his own height. This learning also leads to consider the defeat, destroy fantasies, to understand that he always somebody stronger than you.

2 / Transmission of rituals over the generations.
"Attachment to roots and rituals"

In the rap / slam, the attachment has roots and common rituals that attracts many young people and adults, we see a quest for identity, roots and references. HIP HOP known as the founder of the Zulu Nation has established a "charter", AFRIKA BOMBAATAA in his teaching and requires compliance with the "Charter" and the transmissions of the rituals. The story is inculcated as well as technology. Initiates the most advanced in practice are considered as "examples" pledge of reliance upon, regardless of their age.

3 / A is consistent with the rules.
"The rituals that create benchmarks and time values."

The practice of HIP HOP sets benchmarks and limits. Location (the Pole Youth Resource Deschepper) and time of practice, duties to greet members of the host and the speaker of the association DA.MI, the obligation to make an early meeting of at the end are all codified rules that fit the activity. In HIP HOP, recording studio is a series of techniques acquired (understanding of the topic, research (learned, press ...), writing, diction, flow ...) and punctuates the progress effectués.Ces notions are stabilizing, because if adolescent can sometimes resent that kind of stress in daily life (because they are too strictly enforced or too little clearly stated), he this time - they chose and adheres to the rules governing the practice of HIP HOP!

4 / The word of the adult
"The speaker transmits"

Stakeholders of the association are "state-certified: educators" who have a message. Speech of an adult who knows what he wants to secure the people who live permanently with relatives socially and emotionally distressed, which do not always know what they want for them - for themselves and their offspring.

5 / Aggression in the texts?
"Write, say, are a mode of expression."

The creative writing of text are made to express emotions (pain, joy, anger, love ...) within a given framework. Violence is an expression of human energy that can transcode socially, and may lead to delinquency. We can not say that the practice of HIP HOP is a cure for this interpretation of the expression of aggression. However, the practice of HIP HOP creates the opportunity to meet people that influence behavior, and also develops self-confidence to better
deal with external aggression.
